Sixes is one of just eleven cities in the United States with a numeric name. Many other qualities make Sixes a distinctive place.
There are various accounts about the origin of the name “Sixes.” The Sixes River valley has been settled since the 1850s when gold and valuable minerals were discovered at the location. The most likely source of the name was by miners drawn to the Oregon gold rush who were familiar with the Chinook word “sikhs” meaning “friend.”
As early as 1855, miners used the spelling “Sixes.” In 1888, the Sixes post office was established to accommodate the increasing number of miners, hunters, and fishermen. They all arrived in search of fortune and to reap the abundant resources of the land.
Sixes is an unincorporated town in Curry County, Oregon. It is located on U.S. Route 101 and the Sixes River, east of the renowned Cape Blanco Lighthouse. Here you will find the best steelhead and salmon fishing in the state on the Sixes and Elk Rivers.
