BEST of:
Seven cleanest and
most beautiful, beaches in America, based on air, water and overall
beach quality, as compiled by Organic Style magazine 2004:

The 70-mile National Seashore off North Carolina,
which includes Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke Island
-
The warm turquoise water, palm trees and white sand of
St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands
-
The 40 miles of the Oregon Dunes National
Recreation Area along the Central Oregon coast
-
The forested shores of Redwood National Park and
Gualala River Beach Park in California
-
The wilderness beaches of Olympic Peninsula in
Washington state
-
The isolated eastern tip of Maui, and Kilauea Point,
on the northeastern shore of Kauai, both in Hawaii
-
The south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan,
including Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
Best lighthouse:
A spectacular setting places the Cape Blanco lighthouse near Port
Orford at the top. On Oregon's farthest west point, this lighthouse
is the highest above the ocean (245 feet) and the oldest (1870) in
the state. It still emits light through its original first-order
Fresnel lens, 22 miles out to sea.
Best secret place:
Blacklock Point. Seven miles north of Port Orford in undeveloped
Floras Lake State Park. Two miles of 80-foot high beach cliffs, the
waterfall that crashes to the surf, the Pacific sunset and the beam
from Cape Blanco lighthouse.
Best waterfall:
The best waterfall in Oregon is Toketee "graceful" Falls, 50 miles
east of Roseburg. With 30- and 90-foot plunges in a picturesque
basalt canyon.
